Aptara, a pioneer in digital publishing solutions, has designed and developed two interactive new media educational portals for the Union for Reform Judaism. Founded in 1873 with only 34 congregations, the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) is today the largest Jewish movement in North America, representing more than 1.5 million Jews, for whom it publishes specialty books and educational materials.
Designed to teach kids ages 7-13 Jewish beliefs and practices, as well as Hebrew language, the two educational portals created by Aptara can be accessed by children online, in the classroom or at home. The online environments showcase 50 unique interactive lessons and activities across four core teaching categories.
“Whether for adults or children, making learning fun and accessible improves its effectiveness,” said Dev Ganesan, President and CEO of Aptara. “All of the static content that we transformed for the URJ was produced to give them flexibility down the road. They can easily repurpose any portion of their newly digitized content for smart phones, tablets, or whatever mobile devices their young audiences may be carrying a year from now.”
“For over a hundred years we’ve been providing educational tools that support the URJ’s mission of introducing innovation to the Jewish people while still preserving our traditions. This project very literally embodies that purpose, and represents a major leap forward,” said Michael Goldberg, Editor in Chief of URJ Books and Music, the URJ’s publishing arm. Aptara’s instructional and new media designers took lessons and activities from print workbooks, refreshed them and brought them into 21st century in the form of fun and engaging eLearning tools.”
