Anthem College—Phoenix recently enrolled its first students in the new dental assisting diploma program.

“This program is unique because it incorporates the skills that dental professionals tell us they want to see in entry-level dental assistants,” says Anthem College—Phoenix President J.G. Hadley, PhD. “Our education staff spoke extensively with several people in the field who identified key skills for dental assistants, such as proficiency with practice management software.”

The school is also close to finishing a new dental assistant lab that will be used for hands-on dental training, Hadley says. New students are currently taking pre-requisite courses in anatomy and career success.

The lab will be a replica of a typical dental treatment room and will be ready by the time students finish these courses. It will provide a real-world environment for students to practice and master key skills such as instrumentation, tray set-up, and chairside skills. “Our students will feel at home right from the first day on the job,” Hadley says. “It will all be very familiar to them.”

Dental assistant students will also be taught dental radiography, a skill Hadley notes is not included in most training programs.

“There is a lot of demand for dental assistants in the Phoenix area,” he adds. There are more than 2,100 dental offices in the Phoenix metropolitan area.

Dental assisting diploma graduates will be able to compete for entry-level positions such as chairside assistant, appointment coordinator, hygiene assistant, and sterilization assistant.
