Now visitors can fully experience the drama and historic significance of these locations with a virtual tour guide in the palm of their hand.

TravelBrains (http://www.travelbrains.com),the leading publisher of self-guided audio tours to Civil War battlefields, recently published the first ever Augmented Reality tour of a Civil War battlefield. Augmented Reality (AR) is a revolutionary technology for smartphones that combines real images with computer-generated images. For example, the Gettysburg AR tour allows the visitor to view Abraham Lincoln standing in front of the Gettysburg Visitor Center. They can even take a photo of him or herself standing next to Lincoln.

“Now visitors can fully experience the drama and historic significance of these locations with a virtual tour guide in the palm of their hand,” states Paul Davis, CEO. “Our goal is to create engaging tours that both entertain and educate. Our tours significantly enrich the visitor’s experience by highlighting all of the essential locations and sharing the personal stories of the men and women who helped to change the course of American history.”

TravelBrains has produced tours of the top six Civil War battlefield destinations: Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Antietam, Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Chickamauga. A tour of Shiloh will be published in 2012. TravelBrains’ flagship product is called an Expedition Guide. It includes an illustrated guidebook, self-guided audio tour, and computer CD-ROM. It’s a complete tour package that starts at home on the computer and ends with an audio tour of the battlefield. With the purchase of the expedition guide, the user also gets an AR tour that can be downloaded to a free app called MyTourGuide and played on an iPhone (an Android version is in development).

“Civil War locations are of vital importance to understanding what it means to be an American. 620,000 Americans died in a conflict that nearly ripped apart the United States. As we commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, we hope that TravelBrains’ guides will encourage people from around the world to learn about this remarkable chapter in American history,” adds Davis.
