The 2011 Honda Odyssey minivan has become the first and only minivan to earn the highest possible safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety(IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) under their new more stringent testing guidelines. There has been no other minivan this year that has received both a 2011 “Top Safety Pick” award from the IIHS and an “Overall Vehicle Score” of five stars from NHTSA.

To be named a Top Safety Pick from the IIHS a vehicle must earn the highest possible score of ‘Good’ in all four of the tests ratings; front crash, side and rear crashes and rollover performance. Vehicles are only eligible for a Top Safety Pick if they have electronic stability control as well. The award recognizes vehicles that do the best job of protecting vehicle occupants involved in front, side and rear crashes as well as rollover performance. The 2011 Honda Odyssey excelled in all of the categories.

The NHTSA’s Overall Vehicle Score is the newly introduced system that is part of the federal government’s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP) that is first being applied to 2011 models. The Odyssey was one of the first vehicles to obtain the best Overall Vehicle Score of five stars as well as the first minivan to achieve this award and the IIHS Top Safety Pick. This score is based off of the frontal crash safety test and both side crash safety tests in every front and rear seating positions and scenarios.

All of the 2011 Honda Odyssey vehicles utilize the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure. This is an exclusive body design that ensures occupant protection and crash compatibility in frontal crashes. While reducing forces transferred to the passenger compartment the energy is distributed to provide safety in the frontal crashes.

Standard safety equipment included in the Odyssey are Vehicle Stability Assist with traction control, an anti-lock braking system, three-row side curtain airbags with rollover sensor, dual-stage multiple-threshold front airbags, a driver’s front side airbag and a front passenger’s side airbag with an occupant position detection system.
