Britain‘s Green Deal plan has highlighted home improvement as a way of creating more eco-friendly communities. The plan will be tested in Manchester where 9,000 houses are to be outfitted with energy-saving measures. Representatives from erento, the world’s largest online rental marketplace, say that this is a positive step by the government. erento founder Chris Möller comments: “Home improvement is an excellent way to bring down a home’s carbon footprint and we believe that a few simple changes can make a big difference to our environment. At erento we do our best to provide you with the tools you need to execute these projects easily and affordably."
The scheme, which was part of the Energy Bill 2010-11, will see homes outfitted with central heating systems, and loft and wall insulation – the changes are expected to save tenants upwards of £500 a year. Housing minister Grant Shapps comments: “With homes counting for a quarter of all UK emissions, we must and can do more to make our homes greener. That's why we're nailing down a zero carbon approach so tough new green standards can come into effect from 2016.”
Möller believes that homeowners around the UK should be encouraged to install such systems themselves. He comments: “Improvements like insulation can make a big difference to the environment and to people’s energy bills. This is an investment that pays for itself and we believe that everyone should consider undertaking one of these projects. That said, sometimes people do not have the necessary equipment to undertake such a venture – that’s where we come in as we can help you find everything you need to install insulation, fix leaky pipes, broken windows and undertake any other necessary improvements.“
Möller believes that simple home improvement strategies can make a significant difference to the environment. He states: “By making a few changes around your home you can have a positive impact on Britain’s efforts to reduce carbon emmisions.“
