By switching to Excellent Packaging’s compostable paper foodservice products, Blue Bottle Coffee complements organic product with commitment to planet-friendly waste stream.

The way we present our coffee is an important part of who we are, so we were delighted when Excellent Packaging told us they could provide a cup that would perform well, look good, and help us reduce our landfill waste.

Excellent Packaging & Supply, an innovator and distributor of sustainable, biodegradable, nature-based packaging for foodservice and other applications, is now supplying Blue Bottle Coffee with completely compostable paper cups, lids and bags to enable the Oakland, Calif.-based coffeemaker to ‘green’ both its in-store and to-go waste stream.

The new cups, branded with the Blue Bottle logo and available in both 8-ounce and 12-ounce sizes, along with matching bags, are now in use at all five locations in California and New York, and have been enthusiastically received by customers. As a result of standardizing on compostable cups and lids, Blue Bottle now diverts 70 percent of its waste to compost, with 20 percent to recycle and only 10 percent to landfill.

High-tech approach delivers a low-impact effect on the planet

Blue Bottle’s compostable cups feature a unique laminating process that bonds a heat-resistant CPLA (crystallized polylactide – a bio-plastic derived from corn starch) liner to several layers of fully compostable paper. The result is a sturdy, heat-resistant cup that looks and feels good, and provides an appealing presentation of Blue Bottle’s superlative coffee. The coffee-cup lids are also made from CPLA, while Blue Bottle’s paper bags are made from fully compostable, FSC-certified (Forestry Stewardship Council) recycled paper, reducing Blue Bottle’s carbon footprint and environmental impact.

“The way we present our coffee is an important part of who we are, so we were delighted when Excellent Packaging told us they could provide a cup that would perform well, look good, and help us reduce our landfill waste,” said James Freeman, founder of Blue Bottle Coffee. “We’ve had terrific feedback from staff and customers, and I must say these cups are super cute.”

“This is the first time that a multi-location coffee operator has standardized on fully compostable cups and lids. Blue Bottle Coffee has a developed loyal customer following due to its fanatical devotion to quality, organic product and attention to customer service, so ensuring its product is served in environmentally responsible containers adds appeal to their brand,” said Allen King, president of Excellent Packaging & Supply. “Blue Bottle set the bar pretty high for us and we’ve delivered a cup that sets new standards in design and performance.”
