St. Louis, MO (Vocus/PRWEB) March 30, 2011
Armstrong Teasdale lawyer John McAnnar, along with two fellow attorneys, has received a Saint Louis University School of Law Excellence in Pro Bono Award for creating ArchCity Defenders, a non-profit organization that provides free legal services to clients who can’t afford lawyers but don’t qualify for public defender representation.
McAnnar, Thomas Harvey and Michael-John Voss received the award in the “Innovator” category for founding ArchCity Defenders. The entity’s aim is to be a “holistic” law firm linking the client to social service providers who can treat such underlying problems as substance abuse and mental illness that may have led a defendant to break the law.
ArchCity, which currently has about 60 clients, receives referrals from university law clinics, social services organizations, local attorneys and the public defender’s office.
McAnnar is a member of Armstrong Teasdale’s Litigation practice group where he focuses on commercial litigation and national security law. He received his J.D., magna cum laude, from Saint Louis University School of Law in 2009 and B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh, cum laude, in 2005.
The Pro Bono Awards recognize partnerships with the private bar and are jointly awarded by the Saint Louis University Legal Clinics and Public Interest Law Group. SLU LAW and PILG also work to raise funds for student summer fellowships with the annual PILG Fellowship Auction. Armstrong Teasdale partner Amy Lorenz-Moser was a recipient of one of the awards in 2010.
