Your Smile Might be Hiding a Deadly Secret: April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month -- Coast Dental Offers $10 Savings to Highlight the Importance of Advanced Screening Exams

The Oral Cancer Foundation designated April as Oral Cancer Awareness Month, a time to learn more about this deadly threat and who is at risk. During April, Coast Dental is urging adults to schedule an appointment with their dentist for an advanced oral cancer screening exam, and is providing a $10 savings on the exam. Coast Dental, which has 119 practices in Florida and Georgia, created an educational webpage, http://www.CoastDental.com/GetScreenedToday, to help consumers learn more about this serious disease and the screening exam that can detect it.

Annual oral cancer screening can save lives
"Our dentists supplement a conventional annual oral exam with one that uses advanced technology to improve their ability to detect oral abnormalities in the earliest and most curable stages,” said Cindy Roark, DMD, chief clinical director at Coast Dental.

When Oscar winner Michael Douglas disclosed his late-stage oral cancer diagnosis last year, new light was shed on this hidden health threat. Oral cancer is uncontrolled growth of cells that can affect the lip, tongue, mouth or throat. It can first appear as a tiny sore or spot anywhere in the mouth but often has no symptoms in the early stages.

What You Can't See Can Hurt You
Oral cancer is on the rise. In the U.S., 35,000 people are diagnosed with it each year. Oral cancer is the sixth deadliest form of cancer - deadlier than cervical, brain, ovarian or skin cancer. About 70% of the time, it cannot be detected in a conventional dental examination until it reaches a more advanced and potentially disfiguring stage. Early detection is critical to successful treatment. When detected early, patients have a nearly 90% survival rate.

“Because early detection is so important, our dentists supplement a conventional annual oral exam with one that uses advanced technology to improve their ability to detect oral abnormalities in the earliest and most curable stages,” said Cindy V. Roark, DMD, Coast Dental’s chief clinical director. “The exam is simple, painless and non-invasive and the results are known immediately. Scheduling an advanced oral cancer screening exam is a simple act that might just save a life.”

Shedding Light on a Growing Concern
Coast dentists use Identafi, the first and only multi-spectral imaging device for detecting oral abnormalities not visible to the naked eye. Coast Dental was the first U.S. dental group to adopt the technology which uses three colors of light to detect abnormal tissue growth, lesions and the blood vessels that nourish them. Lesions with well-developed blood supplies are more likely to be cancerous.

Anyone Can Get Oral Cancer
Oral cancer has long been associated with people over the age of 40 who are heavy drinkers and tobacco users. While it is true that advanced age, excessive alcohol consumption and use of tobacco in any form are traditional risk factors, sexually active people between the ages of 20 - 50 are now the fastest growing segment of the oral cancer population. That is because oral cancer has been linked to two strains of the human papilloma virus (HPV 16 & 18) which can be transmitted through oral sex. Even more alarming, 27% of all patients diagnosed with oral cancer had no traditional risk factors. The risk profile for oral cancer is changing making regular screenings an important part of oral and overall health.
