Illuminated engine management warning lights on the dashboard highlight that the DPF is nearly blocked and that there may be a problem with the system.

Forte’s Technical Helpline team have been receiving more and more enquiries from garage technicians about contamination issues with Diesel Particulate Filters (DPFs), but stressed that simple measures could be taken to maintain a clean engine and prevent a potentially costly DPF replacement.
The specific role of the DPF, which is used in most modern vehicles, is to trap larger soot particles within the filter in diesel vehicles, allowing smaller particles and gases to escape.
Phil Dugmore, Technical Manager at Forté, said that problems can arise when engine contamination prevents clean combustion and subsequently the DPF’s ability to empty or ‘regenerate’ with the filter becoming blocked.
The simple and cost-effective way to prevent problems is to apply a ‘Clean & Protect’ solution of Forté Advanced Formula Motor Flush and Oil System Protector, before adding Forté Advanced Formula Diesel Treatment. Following the application of treatments, technicians are advised to take vehicles out for a road test at around 40 or 50mph at 3,000RPM to allow the regeneration of the filter to take place.
Phil said: “Illuminated engine management warning lights on the dashboard highlight that the DPF is nearly blocked and that there may be a problem with the system. The best solution is to try and prevent the system getting dirty in the first place.
“While the Advanced Formula Diesel Treatment doesn’t protect the filter directly, it plays an important role in ensuring the engine system is clean to enable regeneration of the DPF to take place. Coupled with our ‘Clean & Protect’ solution, it helps ensure that cleanliness of the fuel and oil systems are maintained for clean combustion to take place and hopefully prevent the need to find a replacement DPF which can cost £1,000.”
