“The finished product will reinvent this hotel,” Says Don McDaniel, general manager of the San Antonio Riverwalk hotel

Hyatt Regency San Antonio has undergone the first phase of a $30 million makeover that will not only preserve its rich history, but also its solid reputation as one of downtown San Antonio’s premier Riverwalk destinations. The second phase of the renovation, which will include the enhancement of the San Antonio hotel’s meeting space and ballroom, is currently underway and scheduled for completion by October 2011.

A Two-Part Project
Like a fine wine, Hyatt Regency San Antonio has only gotten better with age. With the first phase of the renovation complete, the hotel has once again emerged as more than a place to stay—it is an experience that begins the moment the guests pull in to the new and improved façade, complete with new Porte Cochere.

Warm, natural tones beautifully compliment the extensive use of wood and glass throughout the area. Latté colored marble tiles make up the lobby floor and the hotel ceilings have been sheet rocked to a smooth finish.

The front desk has been replaced with Walnut and white Persian marble “pods” that allow the agents to easily come from behind the desk and interact with the guests.

The open lobby is filled with artwork specifically commissioned to compliment the new “urban lodge” ambiance. Two large, square, woven leather panels, in walnut frames, protrude slightly from the wall behind the front desk, while a branch sculpture suspended from a large wooden frame hangs in front of an original hammered concrete wall.

While enjoying the social atmosphere of the new and improved lobby, guests can enjoy food from the brand new Einstein’s Bagels, the only one in downtown San Antonio.

Looking Up
If the breathtaking chandelier is the focal point of the lobby, the new Bar will be that area’s work of art. The 55-foot granite bar and impressive vistas of the San Antonio River are front and center, enticing guests to kick back and stay awhile.

The area will be filled with 58 seats and six televisions. The highlight of the new bar will be a Beer Cooler where hundreds of available beers will be prominently displayed. Eight beer taps from breweries all across Texas such as St. Arnold Brewing Company in Houston, Independence Brewing Company from Austin, and the brand new Ranger Creek Brewing and Distilling from right here in San Antonio, as well as several international brands will be chilled and ready to enjoy.

Like everything else in the bar, the Beer Cooler will be custom made and serve not only as a display and cooling facility, but also as a divider between the bar and the brand new Q restaurant.

Unique to the Hyatt Regency and the only one of its kind in the country, Q is a barbeque restaurant that pulls in influences from Brazil, Asia, Morocco, the Caribbean and, of course, the United States as well as many other regions on its eclectic menu.

Behind the Scenes
In keeping with the Riverwalk hotel’s green initiatives, all of the air handling units have been upgraded or replaced for better quality. A Natura water filtration system is also in place throughout the hotel. Guests can enjoy the purest drinking water either at the restaurant or by purchasing a bottle of Natura water at Einstein’s Bagels. During their stay, Einstein’s will refill the bottles free of charge.
