Unusual Management Team Changes at Intention Products

The co-founders of Intention Products, distributors of the highly successful BrandU business development line, are 'switching hats" after 20 years in business together. For this husband-and-wife team, that's a big change.

Sometimes there are assumptions about who should be doing what, and we step into those roles even if they don’t seem quite right.

After 20 years in business together, the co-founders of Intention Products, Los Angeles-based distributor of the BrandU Business Profit System™ for business development, announced today that they have switched hats. W. Vito Montone, long-time CEO, has handed the reins to his partner Kim Castle and taken on the role of Chief Operating Officer.

More interesting is the fact that Castle and Montone just happen to have been married for the past 20 years as well.

“It’s a bit unusual, I’ll grant you,” says Castle with a smile. “It’s hard enough for married couples to be in business together as equal partners, balancing roles at home and at work. To flip those roles after 20 years is an even bigger adjustment, but the only constant in business is change. Everything evolves, and so do we.”

Says Montone, “Sometimes there are assumptions about who should be doing what, and we step into those roles even if they don’t seem quite right. We decided that we aren’t bound by convention, which is exactly what we teach the entrepreneurs we work with. There are business-building things I want to concentrate on that can’t be done while wearing the CEO hat. This switch puts us both in places we not only want to be, but need to be at this time in the company’s development.”

The change was prompted by the mutual realization that both partners had skills they were not using in the traditional roles they had assumed over the years. Castle, the creative brains behind such successful projects as the Hollywood Celebrity Diet, the award-winning Concept Cure website for General Motors, and the Emmy-winning short film The Question, has long been the vivacious “face” of BrandU. She crafted the company’s image and mentored the entrepreneurs the company was founded to assist.

Montone, known as “the Experience Architect” in production circles, created and produced groundbreaking, award-winning, multi-media projects for theatre, television, CD-ROM, and the web for such companies as Digital Domain, General Motors, Disney Interactive, and Paramount Digital Entertainment. Under his leadership, Montone built Intention Products’ infrastructure, discovered the science behind the BrandU® product line, and developed the core foundational processes of the three-stage business development curriculum. Montone adds, “I’m excited about putting our baby under Kim’s leadership to take it to the next level of BrandU’s evolution. She is an amazing gift.”

Why change now? Says Castle, “We’ve been focused on structuring the company for a long time, laying foundations. Vito’s strengths are in the details, and mine are in the big picture expansion. For us to really grow, it’s time to focus outward instead of inward, and this is the way that we can capitalize on our strengths and continue to bring passion to the work.”

Castle sees the change as part of a larger paradigm shift in business at large. “More and more, the world of business is recognizing the innate holistic power in women and how that is a great match for the larger view that encompasses scope as well as growth. The Dalai Lama said that the world would be saved by the western woman, and I think he meant that women tend to see a need and strive to fill it in ways that go beyond growth for its own sake. At Intention Products we have always been about consciously making the world around us better through supporting the development of stable businesses. Now Vito can focus on keeping the foundations solid while I find ways for us to fulfill our vision.”
