Summit Data Communications, a manufacturer of industrial-grade and medical-grade wireless modules, today was named the 2011 Outstanding Incubator Client in the technology category by the National Business Incubation Association. A client of the Akron Global Business Accelerator in downtown Akron, Summit bested more than 1,000 international entrants, including two finalists from Hong Kong.

“Summit Data Communications is part of an energized and growing technology community here in Northeastern Ohio,” said Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic. “Summit continues to build upon the wireless communications legacy that began here some 30 years ago with Telxon, and is leveraging the investments we’re making to help build healthcare technology companies in the region.”

Summit products provide secure and reliable wireless connectivity for mobile devices such as barcode scanners and medical devices that operate in challenging environments such as factories, warehouses, and hospitals. More than 1.2 million Summit wireless modules are used by firms of all sizes, including many Fortune 500 companies, around the world. Over two-thirds of Summit’s revenues come from outside the United States. Last year, Inc. Magazine named Summit the fifth-fastest growing privately held computer hardware manufacturer in the U.S.

Summit employs more than 30 people, most in technical areas such as hardware and software development, quality control, and technical support. The company partners with the nearby University of Akron to offer internship programs to local students.

“Since our beginning in early 2006, the Akron Global Business Accelerator has been central to our success, providing us with the counsel and infrastructure a fast-growing business requires,” said Summit President Ron Seide. “Our achievements and those of the other contestants show how business incubators around the world are bringing together public resources and entrepreneurs to create high-paying jobs and drive economic growth.”

Summit received its award at the 25th annual National Business Incubation Conference in San Jose, California.
