Thirteen USA WEEKEND Magazine Make a Difference Day award winners received $10,000 awards from Newman’s Own, Inc. yesterday in Washington, D.C. at an honorary luncheon where honorees were recognized for their grassroots voluntary action.
Celebrated annually on the fourth Saturday in October, Make A Difference Day connects people with opportunities to serve, increases the strength of communities and promotes civic engagement.
Newman’s Own supports the day by providing $10,000 awards to 10 volunteer efforts recognized as national Make A Difference Day honorees. In addition, three cities were awarded $10,000 each from Newman’s Own in recognition of their Make A Difference Day good deeds. One past national honoree received the Encore Award of $10,000 from the Gannett Foundation.
“Volunteerism was always a priority for Paul Newman and continues to be for Newman’s Own. We hope that by providing the awards each year they will serve as inspiration for others to join in, answer a need and keep a great thing going,” said Tom Indoe, president and COO of Newman’s Own, Inc.
Presented by USA WEEKEND Magazine in partnership with Newman’s Own, Inc. and HandsOn Network, a division of Points of Light Institute and the nation’s largest mobilizer of volunteers, Make A Difference Day has for two decades inspired millions to serve their communities and make positive change.
“The 2011 Make A Difference Day honorees demonstrate the best of our national spirit of service,” said Michelle Nunn, CEO, Points of Light Institute, and co-founder, HandsOn Network. “The stories told here show that anyone – regardless of age, location or resources – can accomplish amazing things when they take on the problems they see in their community. It is through citizen engagement that we will change our world.”
Special guests at the awards luncheon included Emmy Award-winning journalist Cokie Roberts as master of ceremonies and Grammy Award-winning musician Darius Rucker as keynote speaker.

As National Volunteer Week concludes on Saturday, April 16, 2011, Newman’s Own partnership continues throughout the year with a campaign ‘Nourish the Good.’ The alliance was created to champion volunteerism. Visitors who register for a project at http://www.volunteermatch.org/nourishthegood will receive three dollars off any Newman’s Own product. During the month of April, in support of National Volunteer Week, Newman’s Own will provide a free product* voucher for each new volunteer who commits to make a difference in 2011.
“Newman’s Own deeply appreciates the value of volunteers and recognizes the impact of those who contribute their time and talent to local community organizations; we want to help encourage and nourish that good work as much as we can. Because of our philanthropic mission, we see this alliance as a way to put our products to work even harder in support of service,” explained Tom Indoe, president and COO of Newman’s Own, Inc.
The ‘Nourish the Good’ program also encourages each new volunteer to pass the offer along to five friends. Those friends, in turn, are also asked to help spread the word to five more acquaintances. A primary goal of the program is to make it easier for active volunteers to engage their social networks and, ultimately, to inspire even more community involvement. All people who register to volunteer for a project will receive the Newman’s Own product offer.
Last year the VolunteerMatch network supported more than six million visitors and over 75,000 participating organizations. The free service makes it easy for individuals to find the perfect volunteer opportunity based on their location, interest, or skill.
“For generations Newman’s Own has been a wonderfully visible example of a company committed to making the public good a part of their bottom line. We are proud to be helping them expand this commitment to support volunteering. We see it as an opportunity for two social enterprises with complementary missions to come together to multiply their impact,” said Greg Baldwin, president of VolunteerMatch.
