Celebrate La Plata is a perfect opportunity to show the community what Power Tots is all about, and to let people know about this great resource right here in their backyard.

Power Tots, a traveling gymnastics, dance and yoga program, is participating in the Celebrate La Plata festival April 30. The company will provide free gymnastics and yoga instruction in a fun and positive environment at the family-focused event.
“We know how important it is to get kids moving, and if you make it fun for them, they don’t even know they’re exercising,” said Kelly Sorenson, director of the La Plata-based business. “Celebrate La Plata is a perfect opportunity to show the community what Power Tots is all about, and to let people know about this great resource right here in their backyard.”
By partnering with local businesses, Power Tots provides age-appropriate dance, yoga and gymnastic training onsite at local daycare centers, after-school programs, schools and birthday parties. Power Tots travels to these locations and instructors work with children 18 months to 12 years old, combining movement and music in a fun, engaging way.
For this event, Power Tots is joining with Civista Health for the WeCan! Program, a children’s activity and nutrition program. The interactive WeCan! guides parents on ways to increase their children’s activity and help them make healthier food choices. Sorenson says it’s a natural fit with Power Tots.“When parents are educated and excited about a healthier lifestyle, that trickles down to their kids,” she said. “Our philosophy is ‘Believe in the Power of a Positive Attitude,’ and that applies to everyone at every age.”
Power Tots serves more than 1,200 students at 40 schools and daycares. Trained instructors are certified by the U.S. Gymnastics Association and are certified for safety and CPR.
“Not only do our students look forward to Power Tots, they talk about their class and teacher all week long!” said Kristen Conques, Assistant Director, Blue Bird of Alexandria in Alexandria, Va. “The program enhances each child’s social, emotional, and physical skills as well as builds self-confidence. We also love the ‘I can’ attitude that is taught during class. This positive attitude translates to other daily activities in the classroom.”
Power Tots was founded in 1986 by Charles County native Kathi Donnelly, who recognized the need to bring age-appropriate activity programs to local centers. Sorenson bought Power Tots in 2006 and has expanded the program to include yoga and other educational aspects, including nutritional and healthy living skills.
Power Tots operates in Maryland, Virginia, and D.C., and has franchise opportunities available.
Celebrate La Plata offers free family fun at the La Plata Town Hall on Saturday, April 30th from 12 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
