Acquiring a unit owned aircraft is crucial to our continued success. The aircraft would be available 24/7 to all of our deputy pilots.
Macomb, Michigan (PRWEB) April 21, 2011
The Macomb County Sheriff Aviation Reserve Unit is very close to purchasing an aircraft. The twenty member volunteer unit comprised of deputized private pilots has been in service since 2005. The unit is led by Lieutenant Walt Zimny and Commander Dave Lawler. Typical missions include search and recovery, water and ice patrol over Lake St. Clair, and other police related surveillance and reconnaissance work. The unit as a whole contributes almost 2,000 hours annually of volunteer community service.
Vice Commander Kim Stubenvoll, himself an FAA Certified Flight Instructor with over forty years of experience, is leading the Aviation Unit’s initiative to acquire an aircraft. “Currently all missions are flown in unit member owned aircraft. Not all of our pilots own aircraft and not all of our pilots that do own aircraft are available when duty calls”, says Stubenvoll. He adds, “Acquiring a unit owned aircraft is crucial to our continued success. The aircraft would be available 24/7 to all of our deputy pilots.”
The Aviation Reserve Unit has set their sights on a Cessna 172. The high wing single engine aircraft boasts good visibility and slow flight capability, low operational and acquisition costs, and as one of the most popular training aircraft in service today all of the unit’s pilots have experience flying the model. The unit has set a $50,000.00 budget to complete the purchase.
