Miss Teen Virginia, Merissa Pence, has had a passion for fashion since she was a young girl growing up in Virginia Beach. This fall, Merissa will start her career at FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising’s Los Angeles campus. “The location in California fit me the best because I want to discover new experiences and its’ a lot like home with the beach and the city at the same time,” she says.
A competitive cheerleader who became involved in pageants in 2009, Merissa is interested in learning more about fashion merchandising, trend forecasting, and fashion production. She dreams of one day producing a Victoria’s Secret fashion show and says the runway event has inspired her. She will be studying Merchandise Marketing. “This is a major that you can really do anything with,” she explains. “I am still trying to finalize my career ambition, which is to become a fashion production manager.”
The Kellam High School senior, who has been a fashion director for her school’s annual fashion show, created an organization, K.I.S.S. (Keeping Infants Sleeping Safely), to teach teen babysitters about the precautions that need to be taken to prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). She has also been an active fashion model for the last two years and will go on to represent Virginia at Nationals in July in Orlando, Florida before moving to California to attend FIDM.
With four dynamic California campuses, FIDM/Fashion Institute of Design & Merchandising is the premier west coast fashion design college, educating for careers in fashion, graphic design, interior design, and entertainment. FIDM’s graduates include renowned fashion designers like Monique Lhuillier, Emmy® and Academy Award® award-winning costume designers, top fashion industry executives, and entrepreneurs.
