The professionals at Element Interior Design, located in Concord, are experts in kitchen and bathroom remodels. Element specializes in granite, marble and tile countertops and flooring, and realizes that these surfaces are an investment and need to be treated with care. The Vice President of Element offers advice to homeowners on how to keep their beautiful countertops looking as they did the day they were installed.

“While granite is a hard stone capable of withstanding the harshest domestic environments, marble is fairly soft and functions much better in less used areas,” says vice President Joe White. “Both materials can be scratched if abused and both can stain if not cared for correctly.”

It is important to keep in mind that all granite or marble counters are made from natural stone that has been quarried from mountains all over the world. As a natural product, they are prone to variations in color, pattern and density that actually add to the beauty and charm of the material; therefore, there will be natural imperfections. As such:

  •     All natural stone is porous and needs to be resealed about once a year. Lighter stones are more porous than others and may need to be sealed more often
  •     Use coasters under all glasses, particularly those containing alcohol or citrus juices. Many common foods and drinks contain acids that will etch or dull the stone surface
  •     Use trivets or mats under hot dishes and place mats under china, ceramics, silver or other objects that can scratch the surface
  •     Clean all surfaces with warm water and mild detergent or stone soap
