The formation of the new coalition government has brought with it numerous changes. The Equality Act 2010 is now under review with considerations to scrap it altogether. Following years of campaigning the act was finally put in place to unify the existing equality laws. The Institute of Equality and Diversity Practitioners (IEDP) are challenging the government’s proposed changes and have called a number of emergency meetings to discuss their challenge. Scrapping the act will weaken their powers and void the hard work which has been put into promoting equality and diversity (http://www.360diversity.com/) in today’s society.

The government’s concern which has led them to question the importance of the Equality Act follows reports that such rules and regulations are stunting the growth of small to medium sized businesses. The “Red Tape Challenge” is a government initiative introduced to help businesses develop by relaxing some regulations. However, a great deal of time and money has already been invested by businesses in equality and diversity training (http://www.360diversity.com/) and making sure they are compliant with the current legislation. A public consultation has been set up by the government on the cabinet office’s website where members of the public and experts have been invited to share their views.
Stuart Bray continues “What motivation do companies now have to continue embedding the Equality Act if there is to be a u-turn in the coming months? It has also been the first time that all protected characteristics have been afforded the same protections, many people including the LGBT communities, religious communities and people affected by issues of age may be left with less protection than they have been looking forward to and deserve. I urge everyone to oppose these changes, and do so now, we must make a stand to keep this common sense piece of legislation.”
The government has pointed out that there will still be regulation where it is most required, however, the possible change could seriously impede the progress which has already been made in achieving a fairer society. EU equality directives will still have to be met, so there will have to be some regulations in place in order for this to happen.
