Giving back to our community is an important aspect of what we do here.

Tampa based web design and development firm Magnetic announced that it was able to provide 1,160 brand new books to the Hillsborough County Head Start/Early Head Start program through First Book.

First Book is a non-profit organization that has the single goal of giving children from low-income families throughout the US and Canada the opportunity to read and own their first new books. Ken Bakunas, founder of Magnetic, formed First Book-Tampa Bay, where he serves as the Chair for the Advisory Board. The goal of First Book-Tampa Bay is to deliver a book a month to thousands of the area's children most in need at educational institutions and other non-profit organizations.

The donation is an accumulation of elected payroll deductions and snack payments made by its employees along with other employee donations occurring throughout the year. Magnetic donated those monies to First Book to distribute to a group of their choice and Hillsborough County Head Start/Early Head Start program was the recipient.

“Giving back to our community is an important aspect of what we do here,” states Jennifer Bakunas, CEO. “Having been able to provide over 1,100 new books to kids who normally wouldn’t have access to age appropriate reading is a great achievement. Our team is very generous and it shows through this act of kindness.”

For more than 45 years, Hillsborough County Head Start/Early Head Start has helped prepare more than 60,000 low-income children for school by providing:

  •     Early childhood and prenatal education
  •     Family, medical, dental, mental health and social services
  •     2/3 of USDA required daily nutritional needs.

Hillsborough County Head Start/Early Head Start Division is one of the largest grantees for Head Start in the southeastern United States, serving 3,474 children and families throughout the county.
