Swisslog, a leading provider of automated materials transport and medication management solutions, today announced that Florida Hospital Orlando has purchased and installed a SpeciMinder autonomous mobile robot to help transport materials throughout its sprawling central laboratory. The robot is fully operational as of this month.
Swisslog’s SpeciMinder robot is designed to relieve laboratory staff of manual transport chores. Specimens, tissues and other items are now moved among the various departments within Florida Hospital’s central lab by the robot.
“We chose SpeciMinder with the expectation that it will reduce the number of walking trips our staff needs to make, particularly during the night shift and off-hours when our staffing is minimized,” said Patrick O’Sullivan, the hospital’s director of clinical lab operations. “We expect the robot to improve our efficiency and turnaround time.”
SpeciMinder will traverse Florida Hospital’s large central laboratory, which includes a distance of several hundred feet between microbiology, tissue typing, serology, and central destinations.
SpeciMinder can operate 24 hours per day between battery recharging periods. It requires no facility modifications during installation, and its route can be quickly mapped and modified. SpeciMinder can transport a 50-pound payload at normal walking speeds through hallways as narrow as 27 inches.
Once SpeciMinder’s payload compartment is loaded, a destination button is selected and the robot automatically picks the most efficient route. After all deliveries are made, the robot returns to its charging station and remains there until called upon. SpeciMinder is available for either purchase or lease.
Swisslog also offers RoboCourier, similar to SpeciMinder but with a lockable payload compartment and elevator interface for hospital-wide materials transport. RoboCourier is typically used by the pharmacy to transport medications and supplies to nursing locations.
