Houston, TX (PRWEB) April 26, 2011
Last weekend marked the fifth year of Mattress Firm’s participation in the BP MS150, a 180 mile ride from Houston to Austin in support of the MS Society. This year 80 associates, family members, friends and customers of Mattress Firm joined Team Dream in an effort to reach the team goal of $100,000 by May 17. With the help of riders, employees and vendor partners – Sealy, Buc-ee’s, Simmons, Tempur-Pedic, and Corsicana – the team has already raised more than $63,000 and provided a great night’s sleep to local communities.
Sealy made it possible for Team Dream riders and volunteers to sleep in comfort by donating 85 mattresses to be used in the team tent at the LaGrange overnight stop. The mattresses remained in plastic for the night and the following day all 85 mattresses were loaded on Mattress Firm trucks headed to local community organizations.
Lieutenant Ryan Smith and his brother-in-law, Noah Clarkson age 15, accepted 20 mattresses, food and supplies for Travis County ESD 12 Fire Station. “We’re on a very tight budget and desperately needed new mattresses,” said Smith. “Mattress Firm not only donated the seven we need for our station, but enough mattresses to outfit our neighboring stations, as well as food and supplies that we gave to a local shelter that helps many of the fire victims we assist.”
Covering 150 square miles, ESD12 services this area with a single station and engine company staffed 24hrs that responds to over 2,000 emergencies annually. Budget constraints leaves little funding for items, such as mattresses, which make a huge difference in the quality of life for these fire fighters.
After their first night on the new mattresses at the station, Ryan Smith reported back that the mattresses are a huge hit. “That honestly was the best night’s rest I have EVER had at a fire station!” said Smith. “Even the prior shift was talking very highly of the night’s rest they were able to get.”
The same day of the ESD 12 donation, another Mattress Firm truck loaded with 65 mattresses was en route to Houston DePelchin Children’s Center.
“We are so appreciative of all you have done for us!” said Debbie Gregg, Manager of Volunteer Services and Community Outreach for DePelchin. “We have families waiting by the sidelines for mattresses. DePelchin Children's Center stretches its arms out very wide.”
A not-for-profit organization, DePelchin relies on grants, foundations, and corporate and individual donations. In late 2010, Mattress Firm donated 10 twin mattress sets to DePelchin to assist families in crisis. After recognizing the on-going need for household items such as mattresses, Mattress Firm decided to provide the center with an additional 65 mattresses to assist with the demand.
“Both DePelchin and Travis County ECD12 Fire Station make a huge impact in improving the lives of our neighbors, co-workers and those in our local communities,” said Steve Stagner, President and CEO of Mattress Firm. “They often have the most difficult jobs and we feel the social responsibility to do what we can to help these families and firefighters.”
