Clairebella, known for personalized gifts in bold fresh designs, will now also be known for a college scholarship. The Clairebella scholarship will be awarded to an aged-out foster child who is pursuing a college education in the fall.
"I am so happy to be able to help this wonderful organization," Denness says. "I plan to continue to support this group and hope to be able to raise a lot more in the future. The plight of aged-out foster kids gets little attention in the media, yet it affects us all."
Denness began training 18 weeks prior to the 26.2 mile event and simultaneously began a pledge campaign which included a video she made to emphasize the needs of these young adults. "I can't imagine training for a marathon without a goal of helping someone else. It really gives you a sense of purpose and motivation," says Denness.
About Orphan Foundation of America
OFA helps former foster children become successful adults. In most states, foster children leave the social services system when they turn 18. In the eyes of the court they’re adults, but few 18 year olds are emotionally, mentally or financially able to support themselves. Without someone to guide them, too many end up homeless, unemployed, incarcerated or pregnant. OFA is the largest national nonprofit organization dedicated entirely to helping former foster youth obtain the academic and technical skills and competencies needed to thrive in today’s economy. To that end, OFA provides scholarship and grant money to former foster students in colleges and specialized training programs across the country. In 2009-2010, OFA awarded over $15 million in financial aid to more than 3,500 students. Every OFA student receives care packages and coaching, and is eligible to participate in mentoring and internship programs.
