The African Well Fund (http://www.africanwellfund.org) is excited to announce that the beneficiary of the 9th Annual Build a Well for Bono's Birthday fundraising campaign will be four schools in Benin supported by Angelique Kidjo's Batonga Foundation (http://www.batongafoundation.org/). Donations received during this year's fundraiser, which runs through May 10, will be used to improve water and sanitation facilities at the four schools through projects that will be implemented by AWF's partner Africare (http://www.africare.org).
To raise funds, AWF is selling T-shirts through its Zazzle store featuring a design by Lizzie Fortuin that highlights the fundraiser's "Because We Can, We Must" theme. AWF will also be hosting two eBay auctions. During the first, which runs April 25-30, AWF will auction tickets to various dates on U2's 360 Tour. During the second, which runs May 1-10, AWF will auction U2 concert photographs.
Additionally, AWF will accept donations through a specially created Facebook Causes page as well as through AWF's website (http://www.africanwellfund.org/Bono-Well-2011.html).
U2 fans have donated nearly $200,000 through the eight previous Build a Well for Bono's Birthday fundraisers to benefit more than 30,000 people in Angola, Liberia, Uganda and Zimbabwe. Since its founding in 2002, AWF has raised more than $932,000 to fund clean water and sanitation projects in 14 African nations, benefiting more than 316,000 people.
The Batonga Foundation's mission is to support both secondary school and higher education for girls in Africa. We are doing this by granting scholarships, building secondary schools, increasing enrollment, improving teaching standards, providing school supplies, supporting mentor programs, exploring alternative education models and advocating for community awareness of the value of education for girls.
