Wake Forest, N.C. (PRWEB) April 29, 2011
WCPE Community and Arts Liaison Tara Lynn announces the May edition of the WCPE Local Arts Series in collaboration with Quail Ridge Books and Music. North Carolina Symphony Music Director Grant Llewellyn will host a free, public presentation: A Portrait of Gustav Mahler: The Man. The Music. The 9th. This event is on Wednesday, May 11, 2011; 7:30 pm - 8:30 pm at Quail Ridge Books and Music, 3522 Wade Avenue, Raleigh, NC.
"It is always the same with me; only when I experience something do I compose, and only when composing do I experience! After all, a musician's nature can hardly be expressed in words."-Gustav Mahler
More famous in his time as a conductor than a composer, Gustav Mahler remains a singular figure in music, celebrated for his vision in reshaping orchestral performance, notorious as an impossible perfectionist, beloved as the creator of some of the biggest and boldest Romantic-era compositions. Join North Carolina Symphony Music Director Grant Llewellyn in advance of the Symphony's classical season finale tribute to Mahler, as he presents an in-depth look at this enigmatic and ingenious figure and tells you how a conductor prepares for the daunting challenge of putting on one of the monumental achievements in all of classical music--Mahler's Ninth Symphony.
The Quail Ridge Books and Music staff notes, "The North Carolina Symphony is an integral part of our state's cultural fabric. Yet it would not exist without its extremely talented and dedicated musicians, including its extraordinary conductor. We are honored to spotlight Maestro Llewellyn, as artist, as he offers us a rare glimpse into the creative process of conducting." Adding to the excitement, Mark Scearce, Director of Music at North Carolina State University, will introduce Grant Llewellyn for this event.
The North Carolina Symphony is one of the many noteworthy classical music ensembles included in the year-long Local Arts collaborative Series created by WCPE Radio and Quail Ridge Books and Music. In her role as Community and Arts Liaison, WCPE’s Tara Lynn emphasizes the importance of motivating businesses and individuals to support the arts. “WCPE is proud to shine the spotlight on the many talented musicians, conductors and composers in our community. We continue our efforts, on-air and off, to remove barriers between the audience and the music which inspires them.”
This free presentation complements the upcoming North Carolina Symphony performance of “Composer Portraits: Mahler” on Friday and Saturday, May 13-14, 2011 at Meymandi Concert Hall in the Progress Energy Center for the Performing Arts in Raleigh. An additional performance is scheduled for Thursday, May 12, 2011 at Memorial Hall on the campus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
The North Carolina Symphony’s limited edition Composer Portraits book is also available at Quail Ridge Books and Music, featuring a special look at Mahler’s life and influence, including an essay on Mahler’s legacy by Llewellyn.
