We have long admired Steve's meticulous, incredibly smart work, and look forward to having him add new dimensions to our already impressive group of property loss mitigation experts.

The Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) is pleased to announce that Steve Quarles, Ph.D. will join the IBHS research team as Senior Scientist – Hurricane/High-Wind Building Durability and Fire Protection.

In addition, Dr. Quarles will also occupy the South Carolina Wind and Hail Underwriting Association Hazard Resilience Chair at the IBHS Research Center.

“We are very proud to have Steve join us as a key part of the senior 'faculty' attached to the IBHS Research Center,” stated Julie Rochman, IBHS president and CEO. “Steve brings a wealth of experience in the areas of wood durability, aging, water penetration, and wildfire - all critical aspects of our field and laboratory research programs.

“We have long admired Steve's meticulous, incredibly smart work, and look forward to having him add new dimensions to our already impressive group of property loss mitigation experts,” Rochman added.

Since 2000, Dr. Quarles has served as a University of California Cooperative Extension Advisor addressing durability and in-service performance issues of wood-frame buildings. He serves as co-chair of the Extension Wildfire Information Network (eWIN) Community of Practice, and is a member of the Society of Wood Science and Technology [Board of Directors, 2009-2011], the Forest Products Society [Editor, Forest Products Journal, 2009 – 2012], American Society of Testing and Materials [Secretary for and task group chair in the E05.14 Subcommittee on Exterior Fire], American Wood Protection Association, the National Fire Protection Association, and the Association of Natural Resource Extension Professionals.

“SC Wind is excited that our grant allows IBHS to recruit the talents of Steve Quarles to the Research Lab,” said Smitty Harrison, executive director of the South Carolina Wind and Hail Underwriting Association. “Steve’s work will directly benefit South Carolina coastal consumers as well all consumers across the country.”

“Although my years with UC Cooperative Extension were very rewarding,” Quarles said, “I could not pass up the opportunity to work for IBHS and in particular at the Research Center with its scientists and staff. I am excited to have a more direct role in IBHS research and outreach activities that will help improve the durability of our new and existing buildings.”

Dr. Quarles earned a B.S. in Forestry from Virginia Tech, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Forest Products from the University of Minnesota.
