It’s estimated that over 1,000 Doctors of Osteopathic Medicine have trained as interns and residents at Sun Coast Hospital, which is now Largo Medical Center - Indian Rocks Road. "No one physician has influenced the growth of Osteopathic Medicine on the West Coast of Florida more than Dr. Alan J. Snider," stated Karen Nichols, D.O., President of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). Dr. Nichols presented Dr. Snider with the prestigious national award called “Great Pioneers in Osteopathic Medicine.” The award is reserved for AOA members who made pivotal decisions and took decisive action at critical times for the Osteopathic profession. The award was presented at the annual conference of the Pinellas County Osteopathic Medical Society in January.
The Sun Coast Osteopathic Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization committed to the osteopathic philosophy of healthcare. The Foundation's roots were first established more than a half-century ago when Dr. Alan J. Snider opened Sun Coast Hospital, a medical and surgical osteopathic healthcare facility in Largo, Florida.
The original mission stated that the Foundation will provide financial support to Sun Coast Hospital so long as it is exempt from federal income taxation. In 2008, ownership of Sun Coast Hospital was transferred to HCA Healthcare, a for-profit healthcare company. The renewed mission reflects Sun Coast Hospital’s original Statement of Purpose to conduct patient educational programs and activities related to the promotion of health.
Today, the Foundation’s “Fund for a Healthier Community” Grant Program and Medical Education Scholarships for students of Osteopathic Medicine and Nursing Education are making an important difference in the continued commitment to caring for the residents of Largo and surrounding communities. The Foundation gives grants to qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving the mid-Pinellas County area. The 2010 grants recipients include the YMCA of the Suncoast, the American Cancer Society – Pinellas County Unit, the Pinellas County Osteopathic Medical Society, the St. Petersburg College Foundation and the “Andrew Hall Operation Van Fund” -- a collaborative funding effort of the Safety Harbor Fire Department and the Mike Alstott Family Foundation. In April 2009, Andrew was struck by a drunk driver and lost his leg. The next deadline for the “Fund for a Healthier Community” Grant Program is on Dr. Snider’s 100th birthday -- June 30, 2011.
Dr. Snider was born in Ft. William (Thunder Bay), Ontario on June 30, 1911. He lives in Largo with his wife Charlotte.
