Ridgewood Country Club has New Hampshire’s only aqua range and is preparing to launch an island green reminiscent of the famous 17th hole at Sawgrass. Ridgewood has teamed up with the New Hampshire based company, Aqua Greens, to produce the state’s first island green shootout. The exciting event is scheduled to coincide with the PGA Tour’s Players’ Championship at Sawgrass and the eventual shootout champion will be awarded a brand new set of Callaway RAZR irons.
The idea for the island green was first introduced during the blustery winter months while Ridgewood was busy renovating the clubhouse and beginning to cultivate an enhanced service-based, country club experience. “Every golf course should be actively seeking to provide their customers with an exceptional experience,” said Keegan Rice, Head Golf Professional at Ridgewood Country Club. “We feel that bringing one of golf's most famous greens to Ridgewood can only complement the great golf we have to offer.”
The island green, currently scheduled to drop anchor April 30, will be over 700 square feet, weigh approximately 4 tons and took 2 months to construct. While much smaller than the famous 17th at Sawgrass, the green will be set within a short irons distance for most golfers and greatly enhance golfers’ practice experience. “I’ll say it like this: an aqua range without a floating island is similar to a basketball court without hoops,” said Matt Gault, owner of Aqua Greens. Aqua Greens has created island greens for top golf facilities around the country, including a 2,500 square foot island nicknamed, “The Hurricaine,” for Celebration Golf Club in Florida. “When a golfer practices hitting golf balls at an island green that has been designed and built by Aqua Greens, the golfer can expect their ball to react as though it were hit to a real land green,” said Mr. Gault. “The synthetic turf that Aqua Greens uses on our island greens simulates the ball play of a real green.”
The uniqueness of the Aqua Greens Island Shootout is likely to attract many golfers from around New Hampshire. Shootout participants will attempt to make the cut Friday or Saturday, May 13 or 14, and will qualify by getting 1 ball in 5 attempts on the island green. Participants may enter an unlimited amount of times during qualifying. All successful qualifiers will move on to Sunday’s shootout where the eventual champion will be crowned with the latest in golf technology. Prizes will be awarded to the top 5 finishers.
“If you can't make it down to Florida to watch the pro's, just drive down the street to Ridgewood,” said Mr. Rice excitedly. He then added the penalty for missing Ridgewood’s island green wouldn’t be quite as severe as missing the 17th green during the Players’ Championship. “At least when we miss the island green the balls float back to shore.”
Ridgewood will offer golf and food specials throughout the shootout weekend. For more information on the Aqua Greens Island Shootout, please visit Ridgewood Country Club’s website: http://www.ridgewoodcc.net or call (603) 476-5930.
