Almost two and a half years after losing what was thought to be an almost $2 million inherited investment due to the gigantic ponzi scheme perpetrated by Bernard Madoff, Norman Bernie Co. continues to survive, despite having to weather the additional challenge of the worst recession in 80 years.
Retail and wholesale supplier of decorative fabrics, including a huge selection of upholstery fabrics, drapery fabrics, and outdoor fabrics for residential and commercial use, Norman Bernie Co. has, since 1957, been providing customers throughout the San Francisco Bay Area and beyond with the finest decorator fabrics at discounted prices from their huge warehouse in San Mateo, CA.
Surviving the Madoff loss and the stagnant economy required a number of difficult decisions combined with some lucky breaks. The decision to lay off an employee who had been with the company for 30 years certainly was difficult. The initial boost to Bernie's business, though, came with all the visibility the press provided by way of newspaper, radio, and TV interviews regarding the very real possibility that the business was very likely to close, bringing customers from around the S.F. Bay Area looking to take advantage of rock-bottom prices. Many of these customers bought fabric long before they would need it in the hope it would help insure Bernie's survival.
An additional contributor to Bernie's survival came in the form of help from an old college friend who, with the help and expertise of his I.T. team, designed and hosts the Norman Bernie Co. website, http://www.normanberniecompany.com/.
Surviving now for Norman Bernie Co. actually is in the form of the continued support of its many new and returning customers, without whom the business surely would not be here today. Norman Bernie Co. still struggles amidst a damaged and very slowly healing economy. However, with the finest decorative fabric inventory in Northern California, and ongoing heavily discounted prices, the outlook is positive, thanks to the continuing support of its many old and new customers.
