Author Liz Mendoza sets parents straight about the realities of single-parenting.

“For the record, I hate kids.” These are the fighting words of author and dedicated mother Liz M. Mendoza in her new nonfiction book, How to Beat Your Kids Without Leaving a Mark (published by Trafford Publishing). In an age where teen moms are making headline news and parenting experts still can’t come to an agreement on corporeal punishment, Mendoza’s firsthand account of motherhood – its joys, heartbreaks and offenses – is a refreshing breath of air.

“It starts out since they’re born you know,” writes Mendoza, a woman who knows what it is like to be a young, single mother. “Yeah, that cute button-nosed, blue-eyed wrinkled five pound seven ounce trouble I brought into this world. I knew it then, exhausted in that hospital room, that he was no angel and the battle was yet to begin.” Hysterically funny and exasperated, Mendoza chronicles her journey as a young mother who has to raise her son against the forces of “progressive” education, loser friends and a whole generation bent on un-doing everything their parents have done for them.

How to Beat Your Kids Without Leaving a Mark is about informing parents of the realities of parenting, that they are not alone in their frustration, desperation and unbearable love. Mendoza shares her personal experiences to great effect, including confrontations with her son’s absent father, mediating her son’s foray into young adulthood and finally choosing to let her son make his own mistakes as a young man. A startling testimony to the kind of connection shared between a single mother and her son, this book tackles the kind of questions and dilemmas that get to the heart of single parenting.

Full of love, hate, disappointment and pride, How to Beat Your Kids Without Leaving a Mark let’s parents in on the reality of motherhood and how to beat the game of parenting.
