US Tamil Group Congratulates Jeyalalitha on her Election in Tamil Nadu

Tamils for Obama, a US Tamil group, wrote to Chief Minister Jeyalalitha congratulating her on her recent election victory and detailing why Tamils for Obama admires and supports her. In the letter they cite her support for a Tamil homeland in Sri Lanka and her vocal support of the UN panel report accusing Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa of “war crimes and genocide” during the Sri Lankan civil war.

Tamils for Obama wrote a letter to new chief minister Jeyalalitha congratulating her on her recent election victory and explaining why the US Tamil group loves and admires her.

“We have admired Ms. Jeyalalitha for years,” said a spokesman for Tamils for Obama. “We mentioned some of our reasons in our letter to her. We said ‘We loved you in the past for a few of the brave and outspoken things that you did. You urged the Indian government to intervene and stop the war in Sri Lanka. This was when the Singhalese government was massacring Tamils in the no-fire zone. You called for food and medicine to be sent to the starving and diseased internal refugees in Vanni. You promised that if or when you were elected you would push for Tamil sovereignty in a country in the island of Sri Lanka to be called Tamil Eelam."

The letter went on to say, "We admire you now for three things you have done. First, you have cleaned up the stain of the corrupt and embarrassing DMK band that ruled Tamil Nadu, a group that could have acted to compel the Indian government to stop the massacres in Sri Lanka but did nothing. They shamed Tamils everywhere, even in North America. Second, you pressed the Indian government to support the UN panel report that named Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa for war crimes and genocide after the world body's report on civilian casualties during the Sri Lankan civil war. Third, you called for economic sanctions against Sri Lanka to get Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa to stand trial for these war crimes and genocide, using an economic blockade against the recalcitrant island nation if necessary."

“We have written to Ms. Jeyalalitha in the past,” the Tamils for Obama spokesman went on. “A couple of years ago we sent Ms. Jeyalalitha a letter praising her stand on the matter of the Tamil homeland. The letter included the sentence, "If no one has yet called you 'The Protector of the Tamils' let us be the first."

“There was a popular video on the internet showing lions in Africa attacking a cape buffalo calf. The adult buffaloes finally protected the calf and drove the lions away. We thought this was a good metaphor for Sri Lanka, so we adapted it into our own version with the lions representing Singhalese troops and with the chief buffalo labeled Jeyalalitha. With her election victory, Ms. Jeyalalitha has made our metaphor a little bit closer to reality. We still smile whenever we look at this video,” recalls the spokesman.

“At the close of our letter we say, 'We wish you well in your new position as chief minister of Tamil Nadu, and we look forward to seeing you act on the admirable tasks you mentioned for the last two years.’”

Tamils for Obama is a politically active group of Tamil Americans. We supported Hillary Clinton and then Barack Obama in the Democratic primary and US general election in 2008. We believe that over 70,000 Tamil civilians were massacred during the last weeks of the Sri Lankan civil war. We have watched the behavior of the Sri Lankan Singhalese victors after the war, and we strongly conclude that Tamils in Sri Lanka will only be safe when this unfortunate island is divided into two states.
