Champion swimmer hopes to educate, inspire parents and kids to learn to swim this summer.

World-champion swimmer Sabir Muhammad today announces the online availability of his first book, Born to Swim, illustrated by Toni Scott Daniel. It is an autobiographical account of his fear-turned-fascination with water that led him to become a notable swimmer. Muhammad hopes to educate parents about the importance and availability of swimming instruction and inspire kids from all backgrounds to learn to swim. An Atlanta native, Muhammad is a ten-time American record breaker, five-time U.S. Open Champion and 25-time All American and NCAA Champion at Stanford University. Born to Swim is available exclusively at

“I want to share my passion for swimming with parents and kids and describe the benefits every person realizes when they learn to swim,” said Muhammad, who has broken 10 American Records and earned two Short Course World Champion medals during his 27-year professional swimming career. “My goal is to encourage children of all ages to learn to swim and dream big.”

Muhammad was motivated to complete Born to Swim after reading the heart-wrenching story of six children who drowned from the same family last summer in Shreveport, La. This tragic accident reminded him of his own near-drowning experience as a young child.

Unfortunately, drowning is a common occurrence during summer months. According to the CDC, drowning remains the second-leading cause of unintentional injury-related death for children ages one to 14, especially among minority communities (Center for Disease Control, Unintentional Drowning: Fact Sheet, 2010).

“Having been a competitive swimmer for more than 25 years, I have seen firsthand how swimming can change lives,” said Muhammad, who is also a Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructor. “Swimming provided me a full scholarship to Stanford University and allowed me to travel the world as an elite international athlete, but it all started with learning how to swim.”

Muhammad is a first-time, self-published author, husband and father of two active sons. Exclusively available online at, Muhammad’s story is one that illustrates how kids can overcome their fear of the water to create a whole new world of possibilities and realize their inherent greatness.
