Suffering may be inevitable, but we do not have to embrace it like a warm quilt on a chilly night or even enjoy wearing it like a highly polished badge of honor.

Heartbroken to learn that her husband of 17 years secretly wrestled with a pornography addiction, Kathie Williams was even more shocked to learn that his obsession had morphed into a physical relationship with an underage girl he met online. His arrest and subsequent prison sentence assaulted her emotions, finances, and sense of reality. With her self-confidence shaken and her faith in God seriously challenged, Williams believed that reestablishing a hope-filled existence seemed impossible. Yet, as she writes in her book Always Have Hope ($15.99, paperback, 978-1-61215-898-3; $25.99, hardcover, 978-1-61215-899-0), she discovered that when the hour is darkest, God shines brightest.
Pornography addiction is a real problem in homes everywhere. It can negatively affect the viewer and his/her relationships with others. Marriages are impacted every day by the distrust and destruction caused when a mate views pornography.
“Suffering may be inevitable, but we do not have to embrace it like a warm quilt on a chilly night or even enjoy wearing it like a highly polished badge of honor,” says Williams. “We can choose to trust God in the midst of the truly awful and elect to adopt the words and attitude of the psalmist: ‘But as for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more’ (Psalm 71:14).”
Williams says that ultimately she learned God can use even the most devastating situations for our good and His glory—if we will put our faith in Him. “Trusting God in the midst of a tragedy is our choice; our focus can be on Him or on our suffering,” she writes.
