Of the subscribers, 22% of gift-givers this year will shop for their gift online. This is up from 18% who shopped online for Mom last year, according to a report by the Financial News’ MyBankTracker.com. Interestingly, more than 61% plan to shop online and in a store for gifts this Mother’s Day.

When compared to Mother’s Day 2010, 11% of the subscribers plan to spend more than last year, and 65% plan to spend “about the same”. Tom Caporaso, President and COO at FreeShipping.com, sees this as an encouraging trend, given the still recovering economy. “Even though ‘it’s the thought that counts’, it’s encouraging that consumers are still willing to spend a little on the special women in their lives.

What are the subscribers shopping for? Flowers topped the list of gifts that will be given this year, followed by a nice dinner out, clothes, and jewelry. Mother/Stepmother topped the list of gift receivers at 36%, followed by daughter (24%), wife (13%), and other relatives (13%). 32% of the subscribers also planned to spend most of this year’s gift-giving budget on mom, followed by their daughters.

According to the NRF, Mother’s Day is second in spending only to the Christmas Season. It’s a good sign that despite the recent economic downturn, this Mother’s Day consumers expect to spend about the same, or even slightly more than last year. However, comparison shopping will be the name of the game, as more consumers will be shopping online for their gift for the special women in their lives, and many will shop both online and in a store.
