Showing where foolishness substitutes for faith, the book dismantles the hindrances that keep people especially the church from moving forward to prepare for the future.

A pharaoh’s interpreted dream once saved the nation of Egypt from starvation, and a new book, Let’s Get Started: A Faith-based Planning Guide on Emergency Provision and Preparedness ($16.99, paperback, 978-1-61215-917-1) by Veda S. Byers, hopes to instill the same sense of urgency in Christians, informing them of “what every household needs to know today, to be ready for tomorrow.”
The central theme of the book is to show people what God has to say about emergency preparedness, along with a practical guide on how to prepare. Showing where foolishness substitutes for faith, the book dismantles the hindrances that keep people—especially the church—from moving forward to prepare for the future.
Byers practices what she teaches. In 1996, she and her husband started storing food for something they discerned was ahead. That learning experience proved expedient, and over the next few years they were able to feed many people during difficult times. Since then, Byers says, “I have studied and taught many people the importance of long-term food storage and how to do it. I would like to see people prepare spiritually and in the natural for difficult times ahead. This calls for a discerning of the times we live in and a plan of action. People need not fear if they have prepared and are ready.”
In fall 2010, Byers began to teach others what she has learned about emergency preparedness from her manual. Out of a class of 22 leaders in her church, 20 caught the vision and put her methods into practice.
