Washington, DC (PRWEB) May 05, 2011
The 8th annual International Symposium on Malignant Mesothelioma, taking place in Washington, DC on June 23-25, and organized by the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation), is the only conference of its kind that brings together mesothelioma scientists, doctors, medical professionals, mesothelioma patients and their families, and other advocates interested in curing mesothelioma. The 2010 conference brought together nearly 300 attendees.
The Meso Foundation has assembled an exceptional agenda of topics which will be presented by well-known experts in the fields of mesothelioma and health. Scientific sessions on mesothelioma, discovery and progress in mesothelioma science, experimental treatment strategies, and updates on clinical trials will be accompanied by expertly-led support sessions, and helpful non-medical breakouts such as "Basic Finance 101" and "Advocacy 101."
“The Meso Foundation’s annual Symposium is one of the most effective and practical ways for patients and their families to gain insight into this very rare disease, and obtain information directly from the experts all in one place at the same time,” said Kathy Wiedemer, MBA, Executive Director of the Meso Foundation.
“For patients who have just been diagnosed, or those looking for second or third line treatments, the Symposium is a way to gather information about treatment protocols currently available as well as new and promising treatments in the pipeline,” she added.
The online registration and the full agenda are available on the Meso Foundation’s website at http://www.curemeso.org/symposium.
Mesothelioma is a malignant tumor of the lining of the lung, abdomen, or heart known to be caused by exposure to asbestos. Medical experts consider it one of the most aggressive of all cancers. Approximately 3,000 Americans are diagnosed with mesothelioma every year.
About The Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation
The Meso Foundation is the leading organization dedicated to funding peer-reviewed mesothelioma research, providing patient support services and education, and advocating for increased federal funding for research. Mesothelioma funding, per death, has historically been extremely low, and even as recently as 2007, the NCI reported that mesothelioma receives as little as 9 times less funding than other cancers. The Meso Foundation was founded in 2000 to address this imbalance and since then has funded over $7.1 million in peer-reviewed mesothelioma research.
