Virginia is kicking off National Tourism Week (May 7-15, 2011) with the launch of the new and improved http://www.Virginia.org, the award-winning vacation website for the Commonwealth. Planning a Virginia vacation is now even more convenient with online updates and enhancements including interactive mapping, deals and packages and a vacation recommendation engine. Enhanced social media tools including Facebook, Twitter and Flickr will help travelers share favorite destinations and vacation images with friends and family. The site carries the Virginia is for Lovers brand and promotes destinations and experiences where loved ones can completely connect on a Virginia vacation.
Virginia.org includes travel and vacation information for localities and destinations across the state. Virginia was the first state in the nation to have a statewide tourism Web site, which launched in 1995. Each year the site sees more than six million unique visitors and is one of the top performing state tourism Web sites in the country.
“We’re excited to share these new Web site tools that make vacation planning even easier just as we head into the summer travel season,” said Alisa Bailey, president and CEO of the Virginia Tourism Corporation. “Virginia has been a national leader in online marketing for more than a decade. As more and more people are using social media, our latest Web site features will connect Virginia with millions of potential visitors looking to plan and share their vacation experiences online.”
The website updates include several new technologies and features that help busy people find information quickly and pull together an ideal vacation. Exciting new features include:
- Interactive mapping – find things to do, places to stay, where to dine near any attraction, event or destination by using the “What’s Nearby” feature with map pinpoints.
- Recommendation engine – while searching for lodging, restaurants and attractions, new technology featured on Virginia.org will generate similar recommendations to help visitors get customized vacation ideas based on personal preferences and favorites.
- More visuals and videos – images and videos of sites and experiences from rollercoaster thrills to beach front fun and cozy inns are showcased throughout the site giving consumers a better feel of what to expect on a Virginia vacation.
- Social media connections – Virginia’s social media networks including Facebook, Twitter, You Tube, Flickr and more are showcased front and center on Virginia.org, allowing consumers to share or recommend favorite pages with family and friends and stay connected for news and updates.
