Bicyclists Go Faster, Longer, with Electric Add On

May, National Bicycling Month, is prime time to learn about new biking technology; especially when it means going faster and farther on your existing bicycle. GBNpro™ commissioned a local bike shop to explore the electric power conversion potential for their tandem recumbent. Adding an electric hub motor to upright bicycles has been evolving, but could this technology be applied to recumbent bicycles, or a tandem recumbent?

Every bicyclist gets those rides when the unexpected occurs and you wished you could get more energy, speed or range. Not just for rare emergencies, but mainly for extending your touring pleasure. Now, we have that option by installing an electric hub motor powered by a rechargeable lithium battery. Imagine going up hills with the option to use smooth quiet peddling assistance or even taking a break – not peddling at all. For touring, this is a dream come true, and now it’s a real option for everyone who already owns a bicycle.

The technicians at the South Shore Cyclery in Cudahy, Wisconsin, applied electrical power to upright bicycles before; however, this time they took the challenge to electrify an unconventional tandem recumbent. South Shore Cyclery took two winter months to research, calculate, and build the optimal system. This spring their efforts were tested on the shores of Lake Michigan’s chilly Oak Leaf Trail; a real test for battery, electric motor/generator and rider.

South Shore Cyclery’s technicians chose the BionX electric conversion kit to install on the Rans Screamer. Nikolaus Prusinski, a beta tester for GBNpro™, has been putting the bike through its paces. Regarding acceleration, Nik says, “its pure clean fun – no gas here!”
