The stakes are high as world-champion BBQ teams set up their cooking tents at Memphis in May’s World Championship Barbecue Contest. Reser’s proudly hosts the nation’s largest Cole Slaw Competition with more than 50 entries.
More than 100,000 people will attend the 2011 Memphis in May World Championship Barbecue Contest which runs May 12-14th at Tiger Lane at the Mid-South Fairgrounds. Hundreds of teams will compete for more than $110,000 in prizes and supreme bragging rights, but only one team will take home the nation’s top Cole Slaw Championship award.
Reser’s head chef, and cole slaw connoisseur, Barbara Jordan shares, “Memphis, Tennessee, is the undisputed barbecue capital of the world. And, no BBQ is complete without cole slaw and potato salad. From sweet and savory to spicy hot, we can’t wait to see the teams pull out all the stops to win this year’s Cole Slaw competition.”
What’s in a Name?
Team Hogapalooza from Wynne, Arkansas, won last year’s grand prize for their “Apple Cole Slaw” made with apples, bell peppers, vinaigrette and, of course, cabbage. “Our sweet cole slaw is a family recipe that blends well with our award winning barbecue – applewood smoked pork with apple jelly barbecue sauce,” says team member Kelly Dallas. “It’s really something if you win at Memphis in May because you’re among the best barbecuers in the land…it’s something to be proud of.”
This year, judges will look for the best combination of appearance, texture, and flavor. Joining team Hogapalooza with creative names are Pork Fiction, Reservoir Hogs, Natural Born Grillers, and Church of Swinetology.
