Filmmaker, Charles Lamont, chronicles the lives of “illegal” Irish immigrants living New York City. He wants to show Ireland’s new generation of US-bound immigrants the difficulties, disappointments, and struggles they’ll face in a post 9/11 America in a new documentary called “Under the Radar.”

“Undocumented Irish immigrants face a vastly different situation to those who came to New York in the 1980s and 90’s,” said Charles Lamont, Producer of the upcoming documentary Under the Radar. “Since 9/11, federal and state authorities no longer turn a blind eye to illegal immigration. American public opinion has turned against illegal immigrants, as evidenced in the state of Arizona’s new immigration laws. It’s a different world now so I want this documentary to show those contemplating coming here illegally the reality of living life under the radar. I also want to make the 40 million Irish-Americans aware of the plight of the new generation who just want an opportunity to live and work openly.”

An estimated one thousand Irish people are leaving Ireland each week, according to the Irish Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI). Many are taking their chances in the United States, but only the lucky few are coming with the right to stay and work. In the 1980s, it was easier to enter the United States on a student or tourist visa, overstay its duration, and live a decent life. The economy was doing well and enforcement of immigration laws was lax. The situation has changed dramatically for today’s generation of undocumented hopefuls coming to America. Today, the undocumented or illegal alien faces a bleaker future due to the struggling economy, and the draconian immigration policies instituted since 9/11.
