“Once a traveler makes the first arrangement towards a trip, whether or not a payment is involved, that day becomes the deposit date,” says Sarah Byrne, Marketing Manager at Squaremouth.com, a site for comparing and purchasing travel insurance.

It’s important for travelers to understand what constitutes the trip deposit date for travel insurance. “Once a traveler makes the first arrangement towards a trip, whether a payment is involved or not, that day becomes the deposit date,” says Sarah Byrne, Marketing Manager at Squaremouth.com, a site for comparing and purchasing travel insurance.
“Many travelers are under the impression a payment must be made for an arrangement to be considered the deposit,” says Byrne. Travelers who have booked their first arrangement with air miles or points are usually affected by this misconception. To prevent the elimination of benefits, travelers are recommended to shop early. The further away travelers are from their deposit date, the less coverage is available.
If travelers would like to guarantee the option of full coverage, travelers must purchase travel insurance no later than 14-30 days after their initial trip deposit. If travelers miss the deadline, benefits such as Pre-existing medical condition coverage, Cancel for Any Reason and Financial Default may not be available.
“The most common mistake made by travelers with medical conditions is missing the deadline for buying insurance to cover their pre-existing illness, simply because they don’t know such a deadline exists,” warns Chris Harvey, CEO of Squaremouth.
Alternatively, CSA Travel Protection and HTH Worldwide plans are the exception to the rule. Most of their plans cover pre-existing conditions if the insurance is purchased within 24 hours of the final trip payment, regardless of the deposit date.
“Our Custom Luxe plan allows travelers to purchase the insurance plan including coverage for Pre-existing conditions up to their final trip payment. Travelers may not consider the need to protect their trip when they first book their travel arrangements, so this gives them the flexibility to purchase without having to compromise on coverage,” says Kathy Townend, CSA Travel Protection’s Marketing Manager.
Another benefit that requires a traveler to purchase a policy shortly after the deposit is Cancel for Any Reason. Cancel for Any Reason can be added to a policy to help refund much of the cost of a trip. Coverage allows travelers to cancel without explanation, however, the price of the premium will increase up to 50 percent.
If travelers do not need coverage for Cancel for Any Reason or for a Pre-Existing medical condition, travel insurance policies can be purchased up until the day before departure. “Almost every policy, except CSA Travel Protection, will cost the same whether quoting ten months before departure or one day before departure. CSA’s premiums will decrease the closer the traveler gets to their departure date.” says Byrne.
