Goodwill Stores Implement New Program to Upgrade Training

Online instruction formalizes worker training and enhances performance

For the first time, four Goodwill organizations will be able to offer online training specifically designed to boost employee efficiency and enhance the Goodwill retail shopping experience.

The Goodwill Industries of North Florida, Northwest North Carolina, and South Florida, along with Gulfstream Goodwill, have inked agreements to implement LearnSomething’s Goodwill Good Flow Program.

The program combines a series of courses, each focused on a specific job title at Goodwill, and an advanced learning management system for assigning and delivering courses, and tracking employee progress.

“This is a one-of-a-kind program,” says Dee Colwell, the program’s coordinator at LearnSomething. “Never before have Goodwill stores been able to find a Goodwill specific product that opens into a comprehensive learning center.”

The program was created in collaboration with Big Bend (Florida) Goodwill CEO and President Fred Shelfer. “We’ve been using the program for almost a year now, and we’re only sorry we didn’t implement the program sooner,” says Shelfer. “We now have standardization on every function in the store and it takes very little of our store manager’s time to train and cross train. We are also showing big upticks in important categories, from sales to employee performance and retention to customer satisfaction. This program is everything we hoped for, and then some.”

Neal Martz, a Goodwill manager, agrees: “This kind of technology is a wonderful investment in our employees. Not only does it bring our stores up to a whole new level in overall efficiency, but it shows our employees how to raise their performance while familiarizing them with current training methods in these high-tech times.”
