Concerts, new events and fast races fill the summer calendar

Del Mar first opened its gates in 1937, and this summer the tradition will continue with the legendary racetrack welcoming the nation’s fastest horses and Southern California’s most spirited party-goers. Seven weeks of free concerts, speedy thoroughbreds and big weekend events will commence on Wednesday, July 20, 2011.

One of Southern California’s biggest summer happenings - Del Mar’s Opening Day – is likely to welcome more than 45,000-plus celebrities, socialites and fun-seekers to the track to kick-off another historic year. “The One and Only Truly Fabulous Hats Contest” will continue the eye-catching tradition of glamorous, comedic and elaborately beautiful hats on the first day of racing.

The Del Mar Summer Concert Series will be more exciting than ever this year with 10 big-name concerts taking place on the new Seaside Stage. The enhanced concert venue, located at the west end of the grandstand, will allow for even more racing fans to take advantage of the post-race concerts. This year’s lineup of performers, headlined by Ben Harper, will rival big names of years past, which included Billy Idol, Jack Johnson and ZZ Top.

Del Mar’s richest and most anticipated race, the $1 Million TVG Pacific Classic, will take place on Sunday, August 28 and is expected to attract top horses, jockeys and trainers from around the nation. Del Mar’s first-ever Gourmet Food Truck Festival (Aug. 20) the Miss Cougar Del Mar Contest (Jul. 29), Reggae Festival (Jul. 30) and many more major events will highlight this season’s calendar, making every one of Del Mar’s 37 days one of luxury, affordability and thrills.

Kids and families can look forward to Family Fun on July 24 with kid-friendly activities, a giveaway for children 12 and under and a visit from Pony Boy, Del Mar’s adored mascot. Labor Day, September 5, will draw families and dog lovers for the Wiener Dog Nationals, a race for the fastest wiener dog in San Diego. And new this year, Family Weekends will take over the Infield every weekend for the entire season.

Racing at Del Mar happens Wednesday through Sunday, with post time for the first race on most days at 2 p.m. On Fridays first post is at 4 p.m. For more information, call 858-755-1141 or visit http://www.delmarscene.com.
