BetterRxCard, the free prescription discount card sponsored by McLennan County, today announced the program has saved $341,996 for McLennan County residents during its first full year.
The card was used to save money on nearly 13,000 prescriptions at 29 pharmacies in the county. It yielded an average $26.65 savings per prescription; good for a 43% discount. Over the past six months the program has averaged 2,035 uses per month. The program was launched in late April, 2010 and is provided for free to all McLennan County residents. Discount drug card programs, like BetterRxCard, are typically used by residents that do not have prescription drug insurance for one or more of their medications. This description includes the uninsured and underinsured in the county.
“We are very pleased to see that over 2,000 times per month the card has been able to help people save money,” said McLennan County Precinct 1 Commissioner Kelly Snell. “With times as challenging as they are, to send back nearly $350,000 to our residents is great news,” he said.
The service includes a unique feature that helps people taking expensive brand name drugs to find lower cost options that their physician would then review and approve. This added feature, called EquivaMeds, expands the number of McLennan County residents eligible to benefit from the BetterRxCard. Uninsured residents in the county that take a prescription drug each month are estimated at 33,000 which would normally be the most people that the card program could assist. But with EquivaMeds an additional 98,000 residents could benefit. EquivaMeds is provided to county residents free of charge, as is the discount drug card itself.
Since the beginning of the year EquivaMeds has been averaging $92 per month in savings or nearly 3.5 times more monthly savings than the discount drug card alone. No other discount drug card service available to county residents provides a similar service.
Residents can get a McLennan County Discount Drug Card at any of over 40 locations including most county offices, Caritas, the Salvation Army, the YMCA, EOAC, and many others. Some area pharmacies, such as Lynn’s La Vega Pharmacy in Bellmead, also distribute the card. In Texas, BetterRxCard is currently also available in Brazoria and Kendall Counties.
