New Software Products for iPhone and iPod Touch Help People with Autism, Aphasia and Other Speech Difficulties

VocaBeans LLC announced VocaBeans™ 1.5, its assistive speech software, which was upgraded to include easier navigation and support for French, German and Spanish speaking people.

Millions of people around the world have difficulty communicating because of autism, aphasia, laryngectomies, or other speech-limiting conditions. They can picture the word in their minds, but are unable to communicate it to others. However, VocaBeans software, which runs on Apple iPhone®, iPod® Touch, or iPad® devices, helps them say the word by pointing to a picture, so their listeners can hear the word and see the picture.

VocaBeans software contains hundreds of words and phrases and allows users to create their own by snapping a picture with the device’s built-in camera and recording audio to go with it. New language versions include VocaBeansFR (French language), VocaBeansDE (German language), and VocaBeansES (Spanish language).

Each VocaBean (vocabulary bean) combines a picture and audio to represent a word or phrase that might be difficult for the user to say. Priced at $49 USD with about 500 commonly used words, plus the ability to build 50 custom words, VocaBeans costs a fraction of the thousands of dollars people living with aphasia now pay for similar products. A starter version, VocaBeansLite, with 50 commonly used words and the ability to build 2 custom words, is available free.

“A quick search shows that the majority of assistive speech technology is found in the United States, but 40 million people around the world struggle to communicate with autism and aphasia,” said Bob Gallagher, president of VocaBeans. “Our goal is to continue to help all people regardless of the language they speak.”

According to the National Aphasia Association and Wikipedia, an estimated 1 million people with Aphasia and 1.5 million people with Autism live in the United States. Another 40 million people globally also live with these conditions. Many of them are missing a very important human ability—to fully communicate.

VocaBeans LLC is a company committed to providing high-value low-cost assistive communications solutions for people living with Aphasia, Autism, Laryngectomies, and other conditions that may affect normal speech processing.
