Tnemec Company is now accepting nominations for it's sixth annual Tank of the Year contest. The contest deadline is Oct. 3, 2011.

Nominations are now being accepted for Tnemec’s 2011 Tank of the Year competition, announced Doug Hansen, director of sales, Water Tank Market. “This will be the sixth consecutive year we will recognize the aesthetic, creative and innovative uses of Tnemec coatings on water tanks,” Hansen explained. “The deadline for submitting new construction or renovation projects is October 3 and all tank styles are eligible as long as they are completed by that deadline.”

Nomination forms are available from Tnemec coating consultants, or by e-mailing a request to marketing(at)tnemec(dot)com with “Tank of the Year” in the subject line. An electronic nomination form is also available by visiting http://www.tnemec.com/tankoftheyear. All nomination forms must be accompanied by a photo or photos of the tank. Once the deadline has passed, a committee of water tank enthusiasts will judge nominations based on several criteria including artistic value, significance of the tank to the surrounding community and challenges encountered during the project.

Tnemec’s 2010 Tank of the Year winner was a 500,000-gallon composite pedestal tank in Newton, Kansas, featuring exterior artwork designed to reflect a blue Kansas sky filled with white clouds. Inspired by a local sculpture that was named one of the “8 Wonders of Kansas Art,” the project features a coating system with an advanced fluoropolymer topcoat from Tnemec that offers outstanding long-term gloss and color retention. The coating system is designed to preserve the artwork on the tank for many years to come.

“Both the water tower’s exterior design and the sculpture share the artist’s signature white clouds set against a bright blue sky,” observed Hansen. “When you’re standing at the sculpture, the water tower is clearly visible. The arched surfaces of the sculpture and the curvature of the tank mural viewed against the surrounding sky create an interesting aesthetic effect that definitely impressed our Tank of the Year judges.”

Previous year’s winners include the Rosemont, Illinois, pedestal tank in 2006, the Anderson, South Carolina, hot air balloon tanks in 2007, the Lake Villa, Illinois, Providence at Painted Lakes pedestal tank in 2008 and the Daree Fields Hydropillar in Dublin, Ohio, in 2009.

The Tnemec Tank of the Year competition has gained popularity in the industry since its inception in 2006, Hansen added. The Newton water tank was chosen from more than 150 nominations entered in the 2010 contest. The contest has drawn media attention from local and national television networks and print magazines. Tanks from each year’s competition are featured in the company’s annual water tank wall calendar and the winner is used in promotional materials throughout the following year.
