Salvatore Scrivo's first solo show is opening at the Carnegie Art Center on June 16, 2011. The show will run until July 7, 2011.

The Carnegie Art Center in North Tonawanda, NY, is the location of “Fairy Tales and Myths,” an exhibition of paintings and assemblage dioramas by the Buffalo artist, Salvatore Scrivo. On view at 240 Goundry Street, from June 16 to July 7, 2011, this will be Scrivo’s first significant solo show in this area. The opening reception will be on June 16th from 6:30 to 8:00 pm.

In his colorful and surrealistic paintings and assemblages, Scrivo creates his own contemporary vision of classical mythologies, whose archetypes include fairy tale creatures, historical references and pop cultural iconography. Juxtaposing macabre motifs, like frogmen with machine guns, and explosives, with eye-pleasing fluttering butterflies and lovely garden flowers, the artist produces a vision of the world in which menace and comfort are inseparately interwoven. These labor-intensive works reference centuries of art history, combining influences from the Mannerist period with 1960’s Pop Art, Spanish and Italian religious paintings, and Pre-Raphaelite influences.

The central theme of “Fairy Tales and Myths” references good vs. evil while addressing the role of kitsch and nostalgia in our current culture. “In our contemporary art scene, sentimentality and beauty have been devalued. This new work explores the line between attraction and repulsion to kitsch, and between the beautiful and the insipid. So many of our societal myths and beliefs come from our pop culture and our mass media,” Scrivo says. Through their visual richness and symbolic complexity, the artist’s infinitely suggestive surreal images invite us to enter their world, and to indulge our sense of wonder.

Salvatore Scrivo taught art to inner city students for 33 years in the public schools of Buffalo, NY. After retiring from teaching, he decided to return to his artist’s tools and medium. He has been involved in many group shows in western New York, as well as in galleries in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Texas, California, and Iceland. See more of his art at
