The struggle to find and understand one’s purpose knows no age, race or economic boundary. The story of When I Am Gone (published by AuthorHouse) by author Marge McRae relays one widow’s quest to realize and act upon her late husband’s challenge.
Janet Drake had no idea how prophetic her husband’s statement would be when he looked at her one day and said “When I’m gone, Janet, find the mission God has for you. It’s bigger than you are and if God doesn’t empower you, you’ll surely fail.” A few weeks later, Peter, Janet’s husband of 40 years died.
Three years pass and When I Am Gone finds Janet, in her sixties, living in an upscale area and active in the local church to which she belongs. However, her husband’s statement still lingers in her mind. She continually wonders if she is truly heeding her beloved Peter’s words. And she is continually convinced that she is not.
When Janet learns of a widower with four children she becomes convinced this is the opportunity she has been waiting for. She conjures a romanticized vision of herself as a Christianized Nanny McPhee or Mary Poppins as she packs her bags and travels to meet the family she believes she was meant to aid.
However, when Tom Harrison, widower and father of four, comes face to face with Janet, he is not impressed. He views her presence as nothing short of an unwelcome intrusion and immediately dismisses Janet. After some self-deprecating soul searching and licking of her wounds, Janet tries again. This time, Tom relents and agrees to bring her on as a nanny.
However, as When I Am Gone continues to unfold, Tom is only the first of the myriad of hurtles Janet must face. A large generation gap and romantic interests for both Tom and Janet threaten the tenuous connections that Janet has made with the Harrison family. Will Janet be able to preserve what she has built? When I Am Gone is a touching book of inspiration and perseverance that will delight readers of all ages.
