Today, Greenopia released the annual update of its environmental ratings of 10 of the biggest commercial airlines operating domestic flights across America. The greenest overall airline for the third straight year was Virgin America. The greenest major airline carrier, Continental Airlines, placed second overall in the study.

Air travel is typically estimated to make up approximately 2% of the United States’ total carbon footprint. Although this figure is dispersed amongst the over one hundred US airlines, there is still a wide variability of carbon efficiencies and environmental initiatives amongst these companies.

”Virgin America and Continental Airlines are clearly the green leaders in the airline industry,” said Gay Browne, Founder of Greenopia. “Not only were they our two greenest airlines this year, but they have also made consistent progress in lowering their impacts over time.”

The most improved airline from last year’s guide was Delta, who earned three out of four Greenopia leafs and placed fourth overall.

Greenopia collected data from airline annual reports and other publicly disclosed documents and measured the data against stringent environmental criteria. The criteria included fleet age, fuel consumption practices, carbon offsets, green building design, recycling programs, and organic, local and sustainable food items available onboard. Lastly a rough life-cycle weighting by environmental impact of each criterion determined the rankings.

“The rapid environmental improvement exhibited by the airline industry is nothing short of shocking. This is especially true relative to other industries we study,” said Doug Mazeffa, Research Director of Greenopia. “Many airlines have reduced their carbon footprint by 30-40% over the past decade. That sort of rapid progress in such a short timeframe is staggering.”

The other rated airlines were American, Jet Blue, Alaska Airlines, Air Canada, Southwest, United, and US Airways.
