Camp Fire USA, Orange County Council and Frugality Nation, a non-profit focused on rebuilding financial strength in the American household, recently launched a new and unique after school program for youth aimed at increasing financial knowledge, financial fitness and championing smart spending. The 10 week program fuses the FDIC’s Money Smart program with an online financial literacy program, The Frugality Game™, to form an entertaining, interactive program that not only teaches the nuts and bolts of money management, but also explores one’s relationship with money, spending, and saving.
The Frugality Game™ is a free online learning adventure that combines real-world budgeting tools and education with games, stories and prizes. Using avatars programmed with realistic financial situations, students will engage simple yet powerful financial tools including envelope system budgeting, a daily spending tracker, and an intuitive savings process, all while playing fun, interactive games and earning tokens, badges, and level rewards that encourage progress.
“Personal finance doesn’t need to be boring,” says David Garcia, community manager at the Frugality Game. “We’re proud to partner with Camp Fire USA and Frugality Nation to make learning about money more engaging and to help these youth gain those essential skills.” Frugality Nation, a 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2010 and headquartered in Irvine, CA, collaborates with leading national organizations to promote financial literacy. It stresses the dire need and direct relationship between rebuilding financial literacy in the American household and the resurgence of the national economy and job market.
Camp Money Smart is beginning this process by giving youth the tools and resources they need to become financially fit adults and avoid insurmountable debt and poor credit once they become financially independent. The program is being implemented at Yorba Middle School in Orange and is facilitated by trained Camp Fire USA employees and volunteers. Throughout the 10 week program, youth will examine their “wants vs. needs” on the road to developing their own rational spending priorities. They will also learn concepts of credit, credit cards, credit scores, and debt.
Both Camp Fire USA Orange County Council and Frugality Nation hope to eventually expand Camp Money Smart to more schools and educate more youth on the importance of financial literacy and smart spending in our everyday lives. Malia Chapman, Executive Director of Frugality Nation, explains that “by educating our youth about spending, saving and money management, we are empowering them to lead successful lives; free from debt and the stress and hardships it causes.”
For 100 years, Camp Fire USA has been one of the nation’s leading youth development organizations. Camp Fire USA Orange County Council has been serving the community since 1956. In 2009-2010, the Council provided 1.7 million hours of program services to over 6,200 children, youth, and parents. Programs are offered in collaboration with over 80 schools, churches, community centers and other youth serving agencies. The Council provides after-school programs, day camps and camping, teen programs and other programs that support families.
