San Francisco Public Utilities Commission proposes 40% cut to successful GoSolarSF program

On Thursday, May 19 at 9:45 AM, San Francisco Mayoral Candidate Phil Ting will speak on the steps of City Hall at a rally against the proposed cuts to the City’s GoSolarSF program.

GoSolarSF – one of the nation’s most successful solar incentive programs, which Ting helped launch – has quadrupled the number of solar roofs in San Francisco, created scores of new green jobs and helped attract more than a dozen new solar companies to the City.

The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has proposed cutting funding to the successful program by 40% and the San Francisco Board of Supervisors will be holding a special hearing to discuss the SFPUC budget, which includes funding for GoSolarSF. Supporters of the GoSolarSF and the Sierra Club Bay Chapter will join Phil Ting on Thursday morning at 9:45 on the steps on City Hall.

Phil Ting and the Reset San Francisco online community have been organizing for more than a month to help protect the successful GoSolarSF program. Ting has launched an online petition at, which has already organized nearly 1,000 supporters. Ting also hosted a recent Ask an Expert webcast with Solar Task Force Member Jeanine Cotter, who is the CEO of San Francisco-based Luminalt Solar Energy Solutions. The webcast can be watched here:

“GoSolarSF is more effective government in action. We are using a tiny investment to jumpstart a new San Francisco-based industry. And independent data even shows that this small investment more than pays for itself,” said Ting, who referenced a new study from the Lawrence Berkeley National Lab which showed that homes with rooftop solar panels sell for a substantial premium over homes without the capacity to generate all or some of their own electric power.
